How to prevent Pardot form handlers from clearing existing Prospect values

A lot of companies choose to use form handlers in Account Engagement (Pardot) instead of Account Engagement Forms.

There are various reasons why it makes more sense for different use cases. However it is not without its own catches and blind spots.

One of those blind spots is when you include a field in the form handler, and the field is not required on the hosted form.

Let’s say an existing (and cookied) prospect visits a form that is connected to a Form Handler. That prospect has a fairly complete record in Account Engagement (name, company, email, phone, address). The form they visit includes a field for Phone, and it is not required.

If that Prospect completes the form handler but leaves the Phone value blank, the form handler will collect a null value. That null value will clear out the existing Phone value on the Prospect’s record.

To avoid this happening in the future, remove phone number field or make it required on the hosted form.

If your business case does not requires it on all forms, don’t make it an optional field. If this were an Account Engagement Form you would have a few more options. But for a form handler, make it required or remove it.
